Collaboratory awarded NSF Convergence Accelerator to track real-time water quality with satellites
The Pittsburgh Water Collaboratory at the University of Pittsburgh, in collaboration with government agencies (USACE and PA DEP), local organizations (Upstream Pittsburgh and UrbanKind), and national organizations (The Internet of Water Coalition and The Center for Geospatial Solutions), are piloting a decision support tool for a water managers and decision-makers with a long-term goal of improving equitable access to clean rivers for drinking, habitat, and recreation across the Ohio River Basin.

Water access is a fundamental human right. However, drinking water access in Allegheny County is fragmented and varied, supplied by a mix of 35 public systems and 1 privately controlled system.
May 2023 Watershed Sampling Day allowed for 44 samples of local tributaries
One of the main findings of our Water Quality Community Consensus Report was the limited amount of data on the tributaries coming into the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers. Understanding water quality across these less studied watersheds helps to inform advocates and communities seeking to address point source pollution and general stormwater runoff issues.

The Water Collaboratory has been awarded the 2022 ARIS Impact Goals award. The Center for Advancing Research Impact in Society (ARIS) works with U.S. and international scientists and engagement practitioners to build capacity, advance scholarship, grow partnerships and provide resources to help them engage with and demonstrate the impact of research in their communities and society.
