Research Interests

I am completing a book and associated digital atlas about three millennia of history of interaction between people and the Yellow River in China.  My research links land use change and erosion on the loess plateau with increasing risk on the floodplain. It also examines how people and the government in imperial China organized society, waterworks, funding, and public policy in order to manage that risk, and with what limitations and consequences. I am developing a GIS and a database of events in Yellow River history in support of this work.
